Smart TV

More and more TVs these days come with the ability to hook up to the internet. Generally this can be done in one of two ways....

Wireless connection. You will need a wirelss dongle. This is a device which normally plugs into a usb socket on your television, and then connects wirelessly to your home network. Simple, effective and no messy cables. However there may be speed issues, or if your TV is in a poor reception spot (i.e. thick walls, interference etc)you may have issues. can be a bit tricky to set up.

Wired connection. You connect your tv directly to your router using what is generically known a network cable. These are cheap and come in varying lengths to suit. This method is the best but can add to the vipers nest of cables behind your tv. It is also an issue if your tv is not conveniently near your router.

Speed

The internet sends it's stuff down a phone line to your house, the master phione socket. From there it goes through a filter directly to your ADSL modem/router. Then it goes wirelessly to your dongle or wired direct to your tv. The data can only travel as fast as the slowest link in the chain. You can do little to improve the speed coming into ytour house, but you can help matters inside the house by....
Removing any unnecessary connections to the master phone line. Phone extentions can be run from the filter. Unfortunately modern houses which have prewired phone sockets dotted around the house are difficult to modify in this way.
use wired rather than wireless
place your modem as close as poss to your master socket
