When most people think of satellite tv it invariably conjures up the word "SKY" in their mind. A SKY system is basically a SKY receiver which includes a SKY card reader, connected to a dish, which is pointed at the "SKY" satellite (known as astra2D)
The (viewing) card is needed to de-scramble all the programs you should pay extra for, as well as C4 and FIVE which are also scrambled for some strange reason. C4 looks like it will be de-scrambled in March 2008. BBC and ITV programs are not scrambled.
There is a plethora of satellites transmitting tv signals to us. They are all parked in a geostationary orbit some 23,000 miles above the equator. They orbit the earth once every 24 hours, hence appearing stationary to us.
A basic satellite box (considerably cheaper than a SKY receiver) will work with most of these satellites. If you connect one of these to a dish pointing at the "SKY" satellite then you will get all the BBC and ITV programs, plus a whole lot more of questionable interest.
If you wish to be able to watch programs from a different satellite (eg German language programs on ASTRA1) then the dish needs to point to the required satellite. All you need is a dish big enough. The weaker the transmission, the bigger the dish needs to be.
If you wish to be able to watch programs from more than one satellite then the optimum solution would be a motorised system. The required satellite is selected using the receiver remote control, the dish will move and you can then select your program
I can supply and install all these for you. Prices start at £110 for a non motorised system (pointed at the satellite of your choice) and £300 for a motorised system. These are totally inclusive prices, and I don't charge VAT.
